The Amateur Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong was set up in 1950, and it was formally recognized as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1951. On the 8th of March in 1999, it was formally renamed as Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (abbreviated as SF&OC). SF&OC is a member of the IOC, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and East Asian Games Association (EAGA). SF&OC is responsible for the participation of Hong Kong Delegation to the Olympic Games (Summer and Winter), Asian Games (Summer and Winter) and East Asian Games. At present, there are altogether 75 member associations under SF&OC. SF&OC is also the spokesman of the sports industry in Hong Kong.

As a National Olympic Committee (NOC), our Federation is dedicated to the development and promotion of sports. It is managed by the elected officers and governed by the Societies Ordinance. Each National Sports Association (NSA) is authorized to organize and manage sports activities in its own field. These activities include organizing competitions, beginner courses and elite training courses, assisting local athletes in entering local and international races, training of coaches and umpires. Through the SF&OC, a number of Hong Kong’s elite athletes have been benefited from Olympic Solidarity Scholarships to receive financial assistance in local and overseas training. The financial support has also extended to outstanding coaches. Based upon International Federations’ and NSAs’ recommendation, the SF&OC puts up candidates to IOC to designated world renowned centres for top-level training. Also, SF&OC takes an active role in Olympic Movement in which The Hon. Timothy T. T. Fok was elected as Vice President of OCA (East Asia) since 1999 and a member of IOC in 2001. Separately, Mr. Pang Chung, Hon. Secretary General and Ms. Vivien Lau, Vice-President, were elected to serve in the “Sports Education Committee” and the “Women’s Commission” of OCA respectively in 2002.

The elected officers of the SF&OC and NSAs are discharging their duties on a voluntary basis. They all have professional expertise and profound understanding in sports. They uphold the autonomy of the NOC and the NSAs, and ensure that our citizens can enjoy high quality sports and leisure activities.

Since half a century ago, SF&OC holds the “Festival of Sport” from March to June, spanning for three months, each year. SF&OC also the provides free training courses for the sports leaders, administrative executives, coaches and technicians. Out of those courses, the most prestigious one is the “Hong Kong Olympic Academy”, offering free courses for participants who are interested in sports management, sports medicine and sports science, the Sports Education Olympism Programme, and summer camps aiming at promoting Olympism towards secondary schools students. Under the auspices of the sponsors, SF&OC holds a “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” each year to pay tribute to outstanding athletes in the calendar year since 2000.
